When I bought my car, I did a comparison of the available choices. Many friends have been asking me my views on the Hyundai Santro Vs. Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R since these are the most sought after. Both are very popular hatchbacks sold in India. Here are some of my thoughts.
Hyundai being the underdogs is always the first to offer better features such as MPFI engine and ABS. They also tend to be more aggressive and Maruti dealers have the take it or leave it attitude.
Maruti has a bigger service network and the cost of spares it cheaper.
Both cars are tall boy model and have high seating. This add to driving/seating comfort and makes it easy for people to get in and get out.
Here is the comparison.
Santro Pros:
- Better Looks (as compared to Wagon-R).
- More comfortable to Drive.
- Better Service.
- Better Pickup.
- Provision for 4 speakers, Wagon-R has provision for only 2.
- Perceived to be more expensive.
- Air conditioning more effective hence cooling is better.
- Ability to adjust the side view mirrors from inside.
- Seat belts for 5 passengers, Wagon-R has only 4. Santro is also approved for 5 people and Wagon-R has got approval for only 4 passengers. Not that anyone ever checks but still.
Wagon-R Pros:
- Better resale value.
- Cheaper cost of spares.
- Bigger service network than Hyundai.
- Slightly more fuel efficient. Although now Santro has new eRLX engine which is suppose to have improved mileage.
- Better Engine and electronic power steering.
- Cheaper.
- Option for Airbags (only available in the top of the line model).
- Slightly more leg space and better comfort for tall people.
- The seats can be dropped completed to create a bed or even a double bed. Useful while traveling and someone can sleep.
I also suggest that irrespective of which car you decide to buy, don’t compromise on safety. Pay that extra for ABS and Airbags (only in Wagon-R).

Hi,
Any ideas about recent deals on Santro Xing XL in Bangalore? As I read in the thread, How do you get discounts on Loans too?
Regards,
Vibhor
Hi Vibhor, I recently bought a Santro Xing XL from the Advaith showroom on Richmond Road.
Must tell you, i liked the car more when I went for the test drive…the gear shoft was sooo smooth, the brakes were very strong…which goes to say that the car definetly gets better and smoother with time (well, i hope so ;))
Its very very spacious in front, both leg room and head. Plus one more thing is, i have noticed that ur head does n ot touch the sun shade in front when u move the seat closer to the dashboard unlike in a Zen or and any Maruti car for that matter.
But i must tell you that this Advaith was really really slow adn very ery clumsy regardign paper work. They were giving me only two speakrs and the music system free. In spite of me completing all the formalities from my side, they delayed the delivery by more than 15 days citing some of the other lame excuse…in the end i lost my patience and calld up the manager direclty adn blasted everyone royally…even then it got delayed fr 2 days after they gave me deadline…so this time i went adn said that i will take them to the consumer court and sue them adn that i wanted all my money back……guess what! They got so nervous that when they gave me the car, they incorporated all the accessories possible- mud flaps (they dnt gve that free!), steerign cover, seat cover, body cover, back speakers, electronic locking, floor mats and other small things! WEll- thats how i got my free stuff.
These Advaith people will handle all the loan formalities. I went for 5 yrs loan. DP is lcose to 1 lac plus 5500 for body colour bumper. Emi is somewhere 6.6 coz icici is charging 11% interest. It costs about 4 lac now. SBI gives 7 yr loan.
This is teh first time we’re buyign a Santro in teh family. Our other cars are ALto, Zen adn Esteem….but on any given day the Xing is much much classier. They promised a mileage of 14. I hope i get it!
Bt all said and done- at least they are btter than Maruti guys who dnt give ANYTHING free. I know it for sure bcoz just last year June my fiance bought an ALto XL and they gave only teh mats- but he had to buy the boot mat!
Hi Annetie and all those who deal with Advaita,
I have been reading a lot in these columns about Advaitya’s response to the buyer. In this regard I have to tell you that the Hyderabad dealer Talwar, from whom I baught Santro eRLX is amazing dealing with customer. I took my car delivery in unbelievable 45 minutes along with purchase bill in fact he did all “pooja”. The car was given within 15 days of my booking with every accessory fitted to perfection. Till date I have no complaints about anything.
Time the manufacturer Hyundai becomes aware of this dealer before it is too late.
Sir,
We own a daewoo matiz in our family and the problem is with the music system. we are having a daewoo original system which has a output of 750 watts and there are two speakers attached in the front doors. I want to increase the sound and can u suggest me whether to put a woofer and a amplifier and extra speakers in it. My budget is till 2000 rs.
Hi,
Atlast i made right choice brininging Santro XL model after reading all the opinions. My dealer was Talwar hyundai and agent was sudhir mantri who was excellent in dealing all the formalities right from booking till delivery and giving the accessories though i didn’t get much freebies as said by few of the banglorites. The executives were so supportive in all the paperwork and during the bank formalities in delivering the vehicle in committed time.I woudl definitely recommend Talwar hyundai, hyderabad to any of my friends whoever opt for Santro. and Will post you about the driving experience and mileage in coming months.
The freebies i got is mudflaps, mats, remote locking, body cover
Please let me know whether it is feasible to take Car accessories like
Glass Film, seat covers, music system, speakers from showroom or external auto service centers.Let me know.
Hi suchi,
Pl buy all accessories from Talwar as the quality of their music system is good, genuine and original from sony or Panasonic. I have opted for panasonic. They do take responsibility for accessories which is good.
For films however, go the one opposite to Paradise tea shop, name I dont remember, but he is the best( he sells toughened glasses, wind screens etc.
Hi Suchi,
First of all, congrats on buying a new car! 🙂
You know, I was thinking, that had you bargained a little more, Im sure you would have got lot many accessories free. Hyundai is very different from Maruti. See, it depends from dealer to dealer as to what all they will give you as freebies, but if you drop a hint that you might be interested in some other dealer and throw all that funda around subtely, these dealers do in the end give in to some more…..
Regarding buying accessories such as speakers, seat covers, glass film etc, i think it would be better if you buy it from outside, as Hyundai products are wayyyy too costly in the name of being genuine products….A blaupunkt stereo will come up to 6-7K depending on what make you are going for, speakers will cost you 4K for 2 speakers….so it might come upto a total of 11-12K…..but try not to go for the cheap ones that some service centre sell, coz u’l end up with very low quality- which you will find out within a year…
BTW do keep posting about the mileage bit….coz i bought a brand new Xing XL two weeks back, and I have noticed that im gettign a mileage of only 9k/L ….when I clarified with the service guys, they said that this is a common problem with all new Xing customers, and that the mileage with soar to 13-14 once the first service is done……

Samir
hi friends !!
I have just booked SantoXL with ABS after doing lot of R&D. I hope i have done a right thing.(This vehicle is to be driven on Shimla Roads)
Hi Annette,
Thanks for sharing the info… Since I didn’t get a good deal with Advaith, ,I booked my Santro XL with Trident. Haven’t got the vehicle yet, but its been already more than 2 weeks since I had booked the vehicle. Let’s see how it goes…
Regards,
Vibhor
Hi Vibhor, its so nice to know that you booked your car.
I am not very pleased by Advaith’s after sales service myself 🙁 Adn guess what just yesterday i had to send my car to the service station (BTW my car is just 2 weeks old) as the tyre was gettin deflated just after one day of filling the air! It happened several times and i got worried. So they had a look and changed the tubes and valves of the tyres as they were defective!
And guess what, when i got a flat tyre (becoz of the faulty tyres they gave me in the first place) in the middle of the road, and i call up the helpline, I get the reply “Its only a flat tyre. You can change it yourself madam.” So much so for Advaith’s helpline service!
To tell you the truth, I dont feel very excited with my car anymore 🙁
Hi annette,
When i inquired about music player..sony two models were referred to me by service centre and they costed like 6990 and 7990(he said he’ll give me grey market price for 5200 and 6200) and rear speakers he’s recommended JBL(from USA)(300 watts,100RBS)for Rs3800.
Please let me know if the products i mentioned are really worth taking from service centre or hyundai showroom. He gives his bill and not warranty from the products itseems.
Can you please suggest whats good in seat covers(ppl who took Leather seats complained that they’r not comfortable as they don’t absorb sweat).
Please suggest which will be good for seat covers.
Hi Suchi,
Sony is a good brand no doubt and has been in the market longer than Blaupunkt, so there’s no problem with the brand…the only thing is that I feel that guy is quoting a little high on it….the reason i know is that i had contacted Maruti when i was planning on a Zen, adn they quoted a Sony system for 5-6K plus 4K for speakers….
Also you have to make sure that you get warranty for the system, coz u can never be too sure about electronic products. Plus Sony systems are mostly imported, so u must have the warranty to be on the safe side. If the system comes inbuilt with the car, even then the company gives you a seperate warranty card, so you can understand how important it is…..I would suggest that you inquire outside as well…..if its not possible try to bargain for less price along with the warranty…
Regarding seat covers, leather looks very good…it is classy indeed…and its no doubt comfortable…If you are not going to use your car for very long rides, mostly for in city driving, then i dnt think there’s anythign wrong with it….The only thing is that leather can be very expensive and must be handled with care, unlike seat covers made from synthetic cloth which can be washed, and you can afford to have two sets instead of just one 🙂
Hi Annette,
You remembered in your initial reply that you got colored bumpers for your Santro. Did they come colored from the Hyundai factory only or did the dealer (Advaith) color it for you? Latter is what has been told to me by Trident. They told me that this is the normal procedure & there won’t be any difference as the material comes from Hyundai only & their painting system is computerised etc… Is this true? What has been your experience?

Vibhor
Hi Everyone,
I understand that the Milk Van has European roots!!!:
The Wagon R: His origins are Hungarian and originally the Wagon R was called the OPEL Agila , its being Badge manufactured by Suzuki, A mixed thoroughbred.
I bought a WagonR VXi in Dec05,when there was a huge discount in Bangalore. Didnt look around too much, nor go into wrangling on a choice Between The Santro And The Jap. ……….No regrets Damn fine car. Wonderful ,courteous service Bimal motors, Bangalore.
Recently i had to drop off at the airport,a friend who had tonnes of luggage, and the other car in our stable ,an Ikon, was full of happy people, but beleive you me….. too little boot space…And there comes the Wagon R, ,if I am not mistaken, the Samurai that this chap is, taking in all that luggage was awsome.Since that day we hold this fellow in some awe and respect.
Happy Driving.
Hi,
Thanks to all the views and reviews about Santro and WagonR. After a month of speculation, I have gone in for WagonR. I drove both the cars and both handled similarly (WagonR was a bit better). Santro gave a grand feel from inside (interior and plastic quality). But I was always biased for brand Maruti and its service network. The feedback for WagonR was better as compared to Santro from my colleagues.
Its been 2 weeks since I took the delivery and driven appx 500 KM. The car rides great even through the potholes on the Pune roads. The car gives a good feel of control. As far as avg. is concerned even though it is very early to speak, it is appx 15km (driven only in city so far).
This is for Suchi,
I would suggest you to go for a Pioneer music system. My family is into car accessories business and over the years Poineer music systems have proved to be far better than a Sony or Blaupunkt (relatively new in market). Blaupunkty speakers are good.
Hey Santroites ,
Can somebody tell me how much wld alloy wheels cost me for santro XL eRLX and which is good brand for same
Thanks & Regards
Hi every body,
I ve been going thru all these reviews for the last few months.I am working with a MNC in orissa.I ve just learnt driving a car.Very soon I am going to buy a car.So the same old question.Which out of these two. What I believeis after going thru all these reviews i am more confused.
Prakash,
I ud rather request U to guide me that which one sud I pick.As per my requirements r concerned,My daily driving ll be some what 30km.road condition is not that good at this part of the country. But I very concious about looks and comfort.
Or should I go for a second hand one.If so what ud be the best price for a good second hand one.plz…….plz……..plz……help me,chosing the best deal for me.Cant wait any longer……..
Hi Vibhor,
Thats correct. Even for my car, the bumper was painted by the dealer…the quality, colour everything is the same….what the dealers get from the outlet is the original model with whatever features the manufacturer is providing the car with…….the XL doesnt come with body coloured bumpers, only the XO has that……so the dealer will do it for you at an additional cost……they will require a day for colouring it….
Regards,
Annette
santro engine is not so durable. engine life is less. does not run properly on CNG . It back fire air sometimes.rear seat is not copmfortable.
otherwise its drive is best.good pick up.good A/c
Hi Dev,
Thanks for posting on my blog.
As a first car you I would suggest that you buy a second hand one so that you do all your learning on that one.
You can decide which one to buy based on the postings here, I bought the Santro based on my decision. Its a good buy and hasn’t given me any problem till now.
Happy Driving
Hey Jawad
Can u pls explain wat is the problem with CNG on Santro
Hi All,

i am so curious……..
Hi Guys,
I have gone through the forum but still can not conclude which one is better, wagon r or santro.
I have heard from one of my friend that seats of Wagonr and Santro both are not that comfortable than other cars like zen and esteem. Kindly guide.
Hi every one,
I would like to know about the the best deals for buying a Wagon R in Bangalore.
Would also like to know if any dealer is providing free Registration, becos I have heard some dealers are providing free Insurance.
remember guys..its not a car not a wagon, its a wagon R.
the tall boy concept was originally introduced in wagon R by by suzuki but hyundai introduced the santro earlier than suzuki did the wagon R in india.

To all others reading this forum,
I had bought a Santro LP (not xing) in 2002.I drove it for 2.5 yrs & sold it to a relative in 2004 after driving 46000kms.I was very very satisfied with my car’s performance.Power steering was amazing & had a linear feel quite unlike Wagon R’s on off type electric power steering(the PS switches off when you are over 25kmph I think).Excellent AC.I found the engine very refined only makes a low humming sound.Had driven at speed greater than 110 kmph with ac & faced no stability issues.(at higher speeds the engine sounds were more bcos mine was 1086cc engine)
People say the spare parts are higher than Wagon R but I never needed any spare parts apart from accidental damages. (only the clutch seems to wear off at the end & needed change after I sold it ).I had alternator problem but it was changed under warranty.I also changed my tyres to slightly bigger imported tubeless ones which I found very comfortable to drive & brake.
My Santro LP had gr8 breaks, but when I checked the Xing XP (belonging to another relative) I was dissapointed to see how the breaks tend to lock.It was pain to bring the car to gradual stop as before.Have other new Santro owners felt the same?
Prior to Santro I had Zen & maruti 800, with Zen I used to have terrible back aches.(I am 5f10in)
Paul

I am looking for good Average and Pickup in city(junagadh)

Thanks in advance..
🙂
Folks, WagonR new model is being released end of this month (July). Believe me, It really looks Great. Also there is a WagonR DUO that is being introduced. DUO Meaning Both LPG and Petrol.
So this should be some efficiency improver in terms of mileage when the Petrol Rates are sky rocketing..
Hey guys…… this is Sunny here… i recently had an accident wid my good ol’ Santro ZipPlus……that too at over 130kmph…. guess wat??? i dint hav ne stability issues… the car was damn stable nd offered excellent braking . N the power steering was Mind-Blowing!!! n evn though i had the kiss at 130kmph…… only the bumper n bonnet needeed a change… the radiator dint evn hav a scratch evn though the collision was head-on!!! n i hav a fuel efficiency af abt 15kmpl on avg city conditions….. but the clutch wore off soon at 25000kms … ofcourse it may be bcos o’ my rash clutch abuse too …. lol …. i nevr saw a wagonr over take me on my santro… evn though i turned the car at tht high speed.. it dint slip off the ground… nor did it loose control or grip unlike the wagonr…. n wat more??? the santro’s E-Epsilon MPFi engine is inspired frm Formula-! design…. which answers for the engine’s rumming , roaring sounds at high accelerations. at low rpm…. it just makes a quite humm. . the ac is ok.. I also do screeches in my car at abt 40kmph… but nevr had a loss of control evn on sandy roads…. the car turned at abt 270 degrees but nevr lifted any tyre off the ground, jus like the lion king.. n know wat??? Evn aftr such a crucial accident, i dint hav a bruise or muscle twist atleast…. i was scratchless…. but the front seats broke though due to the impact of the rear passengers… n my car was fully loaded wid 6 passengers at that time…. 130kmph wid 6 passengers is not a joke … rite??? jus try it wid a wagonr…. n if u want ur santro a sporty sound…. just remove the air filter n see for urself….. u wil scold urself for not knowing this …. it gives a galloping sound that is loud enough… Jus like the sports cars in the computer game NFS.. no diff in sound at all. the loud galloping thumping of the mosterous f-1 inspired e-epsilon engine is quite unreaachable by a wagonr…. ALL U WAGONR OWNERS MAY ENVY US SANTRO OWNERS… but facts are facts…… mail me at ksunny_8905@yahoo.co.in for more details or queries!!! awaiting ur envies………. SUNNY SIGNING OFF!!!
and whoever talked of pickup…… i bet u dint drive a Santro 1.1L . it is pretty enough to leav the ford ikon in the lurch…. i personally had a street race wid a new ford ikno n my santro 1.1L .. n the othr was just watchin hopelessly as i zoomed past…….. with a roaring sound…… n highway drives??? thats nuthing to santro…. it jus goes on smoothly humming a low purr wen u drive it…. but wen u want the power….. it responds quick enough n the speed eventually rises just as the roaring sound… n for the safety matters…. the accident at 130kmph dint scratch me or the radiator…. this answers ur safety questions.. the santro’s metal pillars are more than 3 times stronger than wagonr.. both in arrangement design and strength… the meta used is much stronger than wagonr- which gets a dent even if u hit a dog….. lol evn the side beams of Santro are fuller than Wagonr… they r denser …. so u r safer……. n the maintainance??? i nevr had a reapair in my snatro…. evn wid my rash driing … i only gave it for a periodic servicing once every 6 months…. evn though it doesnt need it…. just for my satisfaction of top-notch performace… the only thing where i wasnt satisfied was the suspension….. which is bumpier….. but it pays off for the stability… imagine turning the Tall-Boy car at 90+kmph.
even sharp curves dint make the care to bend to a side…..isnt this enough now to compromise on the suspension??? cos safety is important than our comfort…n abt the gear box….. i went at 60kmph on 2 gear… 135kmph on 4th gear…. tht was my highest speed clock as of date cos of our hyderabadi traffic… thn more how much speed wil the 5th gear offer??? so its for u to guess.. n evn wid full acceleration at low gears(only 1 , 2 nd 3 gears) i cud achieve a mileage of abt 11-12 kmpl. Aint tht enough??? now wats competition??? i dunno… cud ne 1 plz explain me??
Today Wagon R’s LPG model DUO in the market n i test drive it and compared with santro , i think i will go for WAGON R DUO
Its nice man
Guys!!,
Is Switching from Petrol to LPG gas conversion good for santro ERLX XL, Right now the mileage is 9-10kmpL( have completed only 100 kms ).(I was told that it gives 14-16 km pL with A/C.)
. based on increase in price of Petrol can we consider this option but let me know cons and pros of shifting to LPG from Petrol.
Please let me know
I got some details & pictures of the new Wagon R from the below link. Hope this is useful.
http://www.globalautoindex.com/news.plt?no=1497
Thanks to all the view expressed in this blog. It is a good guide to take a decision on buying a Santro or Wagon R, though I am not seriously looking to buy a car in the near future. A BIG thanks to Prakash as well for starting this blog & giving his expert comments as and when required.
Hi Peeyush and Paul,
I have mailed you the new Wagon R pic.Pls chk ur mails. This new Wagon R is replacing the ZEN .As you all must be knowing that MARUTI has stopped the production for ZEN,so they are launching this new model in that segment .You will get this both in LPG and Petrol varient.
Hi Friends,
Did anybody have a testride of Wagon R Duo.
Please share the experience.
So my qn is whether to go for Santro or WagonR Duo
I am confused between Santro and Tata indica DLS. I am looking for a second hand car around 2 ys old. And mainly my use of car in city on weekends. Can any one advice me ? I am confused about different persons opinions about these cars. I have consultaed car mechanic and they are saying to go ahead for Indica DLS while many car dealers are saying the maintenance cost of dls is high.
Freinds, Read some of the opinions, same dilema I had between Wagon R and Santro regarding which one to select. Took test drive of both and was equally satisfied. But where I felt Wagon R had a slight minus is in its rear seat space – too congested and its BOX shape. But prower steering is really good and people say it gives a tint more mileage than santro. Where santro scored more is in its overall finishing and gear shifting.
So I selected a Santro I have drove only 500 so no comments regarding mileage etc…. but one thing it feels great to drive this car. Had a minor problem with a niggiling sound coming from one of the spring in drivers seat which they told can be corrected. Other that that its COOL.
Hi,
I own a WR Vxi. I also own a Santro. There is no comparison between these two. WR is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than the Santro in all respects. Stanto’s interior looks very cheap like made up of recycled plastic. There are lots of bumps and gutters on the dash board of Santro, which will help only in accumulating dust.
New Wagon R is still not cool as Santro eRLX , I have seen it on road doesnt look that good it more or less still ol model besides what they have done in front could hv looked good for bigger cars but not for small ones .
But on the other hand LPG DUO certainly make lot of sense , marketwise and consumerwise also.
CNG & LPG are definately fuels of future cars.
I am looking to buy a small car and have santro, indica xeta fitted with CNG , wagon r as options. Please advise which one to go for
I owns a Santro Xing XP and my Dad owns a Santro Zip Plus. Both I feel very comfortable and Reliable to ride. The only minus point I see with Santro is high maintainace cost (other than regular service). The parts are available from the dealers only and the company charges a very premium price. Other than this I think Santro is a better option than WangonR
Hey guys, Im back again…and guess what…I’ve been driving my all new Santro XL for close to 2 months now…..and im just loooooving it 🙂 Im so really happy with my car….it has terrific brakes, the power steering is excellent, manouvering is as smooth as butter and there is loads n loads of space….Im so so glad i chose my Santro over the Wagon R or the Alto LX….and oh! did I mention style ??? 😀 Yea yea and after all that initial hoo haa over Hyundai service being bad…..well, after a time I actually found them to be more courteous and efficient than I thought they would be….
“Hey guys!!! My car Santro erlx XL model is giving 15 kmpl on High way and in city its giving 11kmpl and driving is smooth.(just have completed 300 km)
What can we do to increase mileage??? any tips..
after servicing can we expect more mileage?? perLitre.
Hi,
I just sold my Santro Xing XP(Erlx) and brought a Wagon R ( Not LPG) with ABS and Air bags.
I completely agree with Raghunath on the perfrmence of Santro with AC on is not so great as more the no of valve more the Volumetric effciency also it aids in higher torqe in the mid range ( between 40- 100) .
I found Wagon R is more torqee than Santro, Also i am enjoying 100lts more space, and head room and leg room.
I find due to more head room heat due to hot sSun is felt less then Santro.
It has better supension in the back( three stage), if one just goes by looks he would end up with Santro, but I some how did not like the facelifed Santro from it’s old Mickey mouse look.
Another thing which is very enjoyable in Wagon R is even the back seat’s can be tilted as the front seat but it’s not possible in Santro, who wan’t cramped 5 seater I settled to spaceious 4 seater.
My advice to all , if you need a car which is supirior in terms technology go for Wagon R or else to bit infiror teched korean Car.
Trust me even in US , Japaneese Cars are giving hard time to FORD and GM.
But ultimately decision is your’s as it wil be you who going use it.
Sandeep.
