Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs. Hyundai Getz

Both Maruti and Hyundai have cars in the hatch back segment. The hatch back segment has been an interesting one in India, because compact cars are more suited to our city driving. They are easy to drive/park around and the government too offer tax break in this now to encourage users to buy cars in this segment.

After the success in this segment, to offer a upgraded car in this segment, both Maruti and Hyundai launched a premium hatch car. Lets look at how they both stack up.

Both costs more or less the same, seat 5 people and are new designs.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Advantage

  • Better mileage. Although not significantly better mileage but gives higher than the Getz due to the Aluminum engine.
  • Swift also has a better pickup.
  • Maruti has a wider service network, so people in the small towns may be better off.
  • Looks better. Well this is subjective but the general consensus is Swift looks better. Swift is more stylist and Getz is more elegant.

Hyundai Getz Advantage

  • Newer engine technology, Swift is said to have a re-engineered esteem engine.
  • More leg space and the back seats can be folded to give more space. The back seat is split in 60:40 ratio, so you can fold/drop a part of the seat as needed. No need to fold the entire seat.
  • Allows you to adjust the steering wheel. Not a must have feature but useful if you find your steering wheel position odd.
  • Gas filled shock absorbers at the rear give better comfort.
  • Better interiors, although not great but better looking than the Swift.

  2. Hi there. An interesting post although when you write “because compact cars are more suited to our city driving” it sounds very much like ‘your’ city is different from any other city around the world. Is that the case?

  3. Hi Charles,

Thanks for writing in, when I said our city driving. I live in India (what about you?), our streets are narrow, traffic is crazy and people drive too close to each each. A small car works best as it allows people to maneuver easily. Its also easier to park a compact car than a car with a boot.

  4. Hey Prakash, you did not mention too much about the build quality. Swift has a tendency to rattle and have loose body parts after the pounding on the roads while Getz seems to be better put together and should last longer.
    Cheers,
    Sam

  5. Hi Prakash,

I just read ur blog and thought of mailing u regarding ur opinion of the two cars Santro XIng and Wagon R. I am first time buyer and i have decided to go for a Xing. Is it a right choice ? i would use the car more on weekends and sometimes for drives.. Do give me a good suggestion.

  6. I guess Santro Xing is better than both Wagon-R and Swift. Iam not sure about Getz but surely Santro is winner in better pick-up and a/c performance. However, Maruti cars have advantage in fuel efficiency.

  7. hi,

i purchased a Maruti swift LDI car on may 2 , and i was told the car has immobilizer feature , how to find out it has got that feature , there is no indication on the key r any special mention . but the dealer says so , and asked me to pay xtra RS 5000 .

  8. Hi, Prakash

I am planning to buy the Getz. But just wondering if i could do long distance and how safe it is against the swift.

    Hi Prakash

i am planning to buy a car. but can not decide between WAGON-R and Santro. Also i can not drive, i have to learn. please suggest which one will be suitable with respect to comfort, safety and fuel efficiency. Also please advice the MODEL of Wagon-R or Santro.

  10. Hi Prakash,

I was glad i stumbbled into this page while searching for a car. I was looking at buying a Swift or a Getz, however the automatic version. My use would be to tavel to office and back on a daily basis say 35km, to&fro. However fuel efficieny is important. the price of the car would also be of concern i can afford the price of a swift so anything that range or less should be good.

    Kindly share your thoughts on:
1.What amount of milage would i lose if i take an automatic car instead of a manual one.

2.Are there any cars other than swift/getz which would be better off as an autimatic car like zen, spark…?

    Best Regards,
    Sarina

  11. please point out each specifications
because you are saying only better milage
if the milage are 15 and 16 then this data can be leave and check another good quality
    thanks

  12. Hi,
How good is the Getz Prime 1.1 as compared to the Swift in terms of fuel consumption. With 20bhp extra the Swift should use more, but is it significantly more.???

  13. Hi
I need to know if I can purchase Swift or Santro.Mileage/build are imp factors for me.
Both are from diff segment but I need to know the diff.My daily run is 40 KM.
    Please suggest.

  14. Swift is just kewl… many people told that its down on average… but its easily giving 13-14 in city … pickup is superb with smooth drive with big tubless tyres… good for indin roads…
if u love to drive … swift is a car for u…

  15. Saikat Chakraborty

Hi, I plan to buy Getz Prime. But snot sure whether to buy 1.3 GLS or 1.3 GLX. One dealer said that the only difference between the two is ABS and alloy wheels, so better we take GLS and add the alloy wheels . No need for ABS in city. Not sure if he is correct.

  16. Thats a nice review. I’m doing a research for dad who wants to buy hyundai getz or suzuki swift but cant decide. The most annoying thing i just found out that the swift in india is a 1.3 lt (1300cc) engine. Here in australia we have the options of a 1.6 with vvti and sports versions for the swift. Also, importantly i noticed in the comments something about a re-engineered esteem engine for the swift. If that is the case, i would definitely be staying away for the swift coz thats like a ten year old technology. Why do u get a different engine in india than rest of the world. Really disappointing. Also can someone pls confirm if the swift has vvti or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  17. Hi Caron,
I havent tried the Getz. But I can certainly vouch for the Swift. It is certainly not the reworked Esteem engine. It is a new, built from scratch 87 BHP engine which is peppy enough for Indian roads. I bought one for my parents in India after a lot of research and test-driving the car. It is a very good car. You can take my word for it, my car is a BMW 520 and I live in the UK. I was very pleased to drive the Swift. And cerainly go for the ZXi.

  18. areee bhai swift sabse badia hai … bas itna pata hai .. hamne 4 swift le le hain 3 months mein. jabki main fabia soch raha yha at last swift is the bst….

  19. Just dropped to add some info, Prakash do correct me if I am wrong anywhere …

SWIFT has Electronic Power Steering with a minimal radius of 4.7 where as GETZ has a Hydraulic Steering with a radius of 5 .. SWIFT beats GETZ

GETZ has an awsome gear shift pattern which is easy and comfortable, whereas SWIFT being another Maruti product lacks the comfort though both apprear to be similar .. GETZ takes over h SWIFT

SWIFT is swiftier because of its less weight and more power .. SWIFT easily takes a lead on GETZ

GETZ thoug looks to be smaller has a sturdy body and is vigilant when compared to SWIFT which is bulky .. GETZ takes the lead

GETZ gets its space for the boot as well as the person back, offers suffficient space that you never feel that you hit someone .. GETZ scores way aheadd of SWIFT where it suffers big time with the space

Overall its a call one need to take, if performance then go for SWIFT but if you take on comfort and stability then GETZ is ur choice

  26. Hi Prakas, you forgot to add the Swift is way ahead in tems of safety because of dual Airbags and ABS in Zxi version which the Getz does not have.

  27. Hello sir what is the immobilizer which i read in a comment for which 5000 extra has been charged by the dealer. How about the A/c and the engine life, annual maintenance cost of the vehicle

  28. shambhunath shukla

hi prakash, presently i have two car one aveo 1400 & another is alto lx. i want to sell alto b’coz it is not comfort to drive it on highways & aveo is more costly for long drive. i want to buy a such who gives better milage & comfort. 2nd i want to buy a compact car b’coz in delhi it is v. much difficult to drive a big car & parking problem. though i hv a driver but whenever i want to drive self then i feel aveo is not better. can you suggest me which is better alto, zen estilo, vagon-r, santro, i10, swift or getz. shambhunath shukla

  29. hi there

    .

    Dear Sir,

I am planning to buy a car either from Maruthi or from Hyundai so please suggest me which is better from these four 1) SWIFT VDI or ZXI
    2) GETS PRIME or santro xing

My Main traveling is continues 450kms once in three months to my native

  32. I bought a new Ritz , it’s excellent and I feel great for my choice. It gives 19 km/pl on high way and 16/pl in city with AC. The smoothness of the engine is better than the swift & getz or others in its class. With full load the performance of the engine is excellent, the shift from 2-3 is much better than swift&getz. The high seating position gives you great comfort while driving. The car is very spacious and excellent for elders to feel comfortable
