When I bought my car, I did a comparison of the available choices. Many friends have been asking me my views on the Hyundai Santro Vs. Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R since these are the most sought after. Both are very popular hatchbacks sold in India. Here are some of my thoughts.
Hyundai being the underdogs is always the first to offer better features such as MPFI engine and ABS. They also tend to be more aggressive and Maruti dealers have the take it or leave it attitude.
Maruti has a bigger service network and the cost of spares it cheaper.
Both cars are tall boy model and have high seating. This add to driving/seating comfort and makes it easy for people to get in and get out.
Here is the comparison.
Santro Pros:
- Better Looks (as compared to Wagon-R).
- More comfortable to Drive.
- Better Service.
- Better Pickup.
- Provision for 4 speakers, Wagon-R has provision for only 2.
- Perceived to be more expensive.
- Air conditioning more effective hence cooling is better.
- Ability to adjust the side view mirrors from inside.
- Seat belts for 5 passengers, Wagon-R has only 4. Santro is also approved for 5 people and Wagon-R has got approval for only 4 passengers. Not that anyone ever checks but still.
Wagon-R Pros:
- Better resale value.
- Cheaper cost of spares.
- Bigger service network than Hyundai.
- Slightly more fuel efficient. Although now Santro has new eRLX engine which is suppose to have improved mileage.
- Better Engine and electronic power steering.
- Cheaper.
- Option for Airbags (only available in the top of the line model).
- Slightly more leg space and better comfort for tall people.
- The seats can be dropped completed to create a bed or even a double bed. Useful while traveling and someone can sleep.
I also suggest that irrespective of which car you decide to buy, don’t compromise on safety. Pay that extra for ABS and Airbags (only in Wagon-R).

I’v booked SANTRO XINGS GLS model on 30th Sept.07, after confusion in Santro & Zeta becuase my running is 60 km per day, i look for CNG both allowed for CNG, but due to better performance through some user I go for Santro GLS MOdel launched in this week, which has cost me 3.8L with discout+MP3+Free ins.+mud flap. without CNG Kit. which is costlier than zeta by 60-65K. but some confidence that Santro would much be better in sitting, high cabin, style, mileage, re-sale value etc.
WagonR is the best when compared to Santro. Santro is easy to drive but other than that I dont see any advantage in it. But WagonR has all the features more advantageous for Indian roads. That too the new WagonR looks better than any other B segment vehicles. Buy WagonR and enjoy ride with less cost and more happiness.
santro is not a bad looking car but we look in back side of the santro we found that any other vehicle can full damage it that’s way. or wagonR is the first wide body car not the Logan.
I would like to compare WagonR with Santro Xing. I’m impressed very much by LPG and so am attracted to WagonR Duo. But, if I can buy a Santro Xing and fit a good quality approved LPG kit in it will that be a good option. So, which one do you think would be better?

One Thing I have to Share is Wagon R is for people who makes decision with the mind and brains and Santro is for those who does the same with their heart.
I planning to buy a wagon r Lxi with power steering. However, the dealer is asking to me to buy all accessories, is it cheaper and better to look for accessories from the open market like flaps, mats, music system etc.
The offer on maruti wagon r is 18000 plus 4000 for the premium club holder which can deducted from the cost of maruti wagon r lxi model, is this a good offer compared to other parts of the country. No loan has been taken by me

Loved reading this entire forum. I have recently got my new Santo XL. Reasons for buying was the looks and drive quality. (the rest of the reasons are there in the forums , dont want to repeat the features all over again)
I had zeroed down on the wagon R and santro. But while having a test drive on the wagon R .. I did not get a very safe feeling on turns specially at high speeds.( Wagon R is a fantastic Car , Might be due to the sitting position I had a perception of instability). Another thing is the gear shift. Santro has a lovely Gear shift.
Well I negotiated a lovely Deal on my car. following are the details.
1) Free Insurance
2) Free Half Road Tax
3) Free Teflon and Undercoating
4) Free Darker Tinting of the glasses
5) Free MP3 Player with front 2 speakers (2 yrs warranty) / Body Coloured Bumpers (had to choose between one of them)
6) Free Mattings, Mup Flaps, Steering Cover, Reverse Horn.
Hope this helps you guys in negotiating your deals on new cars. Trust me if u are a aggressive negotiator you can easily get this deal.

The wagon r shakes and makes noises over 90 km/hr i don’t understand why is it because the engine is still very new and not yet opened it has just done 200kms
Recomendation for fitting LPG kit:
I have fitted LPG kit in Santro Xing erlx XO model. After running about 10,000Kms and completing the 3rd free service in petrol I went for the option to fit LPG. The petrol mielage at that time is around 18 Kms per litre. I have used the Lovata kit with a 35 litre torroidal tank. The mielage they assure is 80 to 90% the petrol mielage. I am getting a mielage of 15 while using the LPG.
Cost calculation:
Petrol: 18 Kms for 1 litre@46 Rs so 2.56 Rs/Km
LPG from Indian Oil Pump: 15 Kms for 1 litre@27 Rs so 1.8 Rs/Km
Cost of conversion and getting the fuel as gas registered in ur RC book: 20,000Rs
Kms to run to get the money back: 20000/(2.56-1.8) = 26,315 Kms
Even though it is economical to use the LPG, U should have moderately good use of the car daily to get the return for the LPG kit investment.
Mode of use: Starting will be done only in petrol. After going 2 Kms in petrol I used to manually switch it to Gas. The kit also has a automatic shift to gas imediately after the start. But I prefer the shifting to happen only after the engine is heated to a minimum temperature.
Till now I don’t have any problems in using the LPG but I would say that after covering a 1Lac kms only I can recommend whether it is successful.

As far as Japanese versus Korean, I wud say
Akai/Aiwa-> Japanese-> Suzuki
Samsung/LG-> Korean-> Hyundai
Wonder why I didnt write Sony for Japanese , bcoz Honda/Toyota are the Sony. Suzuki is like Aiwa/Akai
And Hyundai is Samsung/LG.
So if u were to buya TV wud u buy a Samsung or an Akai. USe common sense. All this japanese vs korean dbate is just an excuse by Wagon R owners to justify their purchase.
Buy whichever u like, but my preference is Santro.
I am here for a visit in USA. I have seen a lot of Hyundai cars( which is the fastest growing brand in US in automobile sector). Although definitely not as many as Honda or Toyota but I am yet to see any Suzuki. Although I have ssen ads of Suzuki on TV here.
So think and decide. Do not go by the korean vs Japanese. A top brand of Korean wud be much better than a low brand of Japanese

I am from Goa and have got my car from ALCON Hyundai here in Porvorim Goa.
Actually I tried making deals with the 2 dealers in Goa (the other is in Verna Goa). Whenever anyone used to call, i used to tell them that the other dealer is giving me this and that ( sometimes used to bluff ;-)) So used the competition between the two dealers to my advantage.
Hyundai has now stopped the top end XO model. The XL model has been renamed to GLS and has been given colored bumpers n internal adjustable ORVMs. This is now the top model.
I think they r yet to launch a new model called “PA” which will be placed between the Santro and Getz. I think thats Why they have stopped the top end XO model in Santro.
I have almost done 1400kms on my santro. Drove it once a little above 100km/hr (could not resist the temptation), but ur not supposed to exceed 60km/hr before the first service. Anyways the car is very stable even at 100. I think it will remain quiet stable even at speeds of 115-120Km/hr.
Well … ill try the top speed and update the performance in this forum later ….

4) Fabric Seat covers
5) 4000 corporate discount
Total discount comes to some 30K.
I would like to know can I get further discount.
Few of the initial threads talks about loan discount.
Also, I would like to know how can I get the discount on loan.
Also, it seems that Hyundai is now offering only three variants as GL(Non-AC), GL(AC) and GLS.

In last 3 days, I have covered a distance of 1600 Kms in my new Wagon-R Duo, (Bangalore-Udupi-Karwar-Bangalore)and did sort of stress testing on the car.
Average speed: 90Kms
Top Speed: 130 KMPH
Handling is very mooth and responsive.
Overall drive quality even on stretches of bad roads is excellent expecially ground clearance.
Only one concern is Brakes appear to be weak.3-4 times though I braked hard at 100 KMPh from a distance of abt 50 meters, Wagon-R couldnt come to a screeching halt at Potholes and Speed breakers.
Can anyone guide me on following:
1. Is there any way, I can improve braking of wagon R by installig Braking Accesory of MGA or some other company?
2. In case of rim bend what would be impact on normal rim(Default standard fitted by maruti) and Alloy wheels ?
3. Do alloy wheels alos bend and impact alignment/steering wheels ?
4 Can anyone (Raghu) please tell the price of
a. Mobil 1 5W-50 engine Oil,
b. Esso 75w-85 Gearbox Oil with Bhadrals gear box additive,and
c. Iridium spark plugs
Overall , It was amazing drive.Never realised It was a small car on such a long trip (Even in bad roads).
I have bought a WAGONr six months back and its the most comfortable vehicle in its class when Compared to SANTRO.It has space than any car.
Guys.. lets be practical than just supporting the car which we own.
Both cars comes with tall boy design, which provide more comfort.
On looks also both score same marks.
On driving comfort santro leads a bit since it has wider tyre’s and more power at lower RPM compared to Wagon R. But in Maximum power output WagonR scores 1Bhp ahead.
When it comes to engine, always japanese leads.Lets dont forget WagonR is the largest selling model for Suzuki in Japan.(As Alto in India).
On Fuel economy, both cars sore alike.(excuse the LPG version of WagonR).
On Inital pickup, Santro scores over WagonR due its high power at low RPM.But both cars can reach 100kmph in almost same time.
Both cars have good interiors.Santros odometer is mannual while WaganR’s is electronic.
Maruthi has most no: of service stations. But Santro is known to be a car with zero maintanance.
WangonR placed second in JD power’s study regarding “less no: of problems faced after owning a new vehicle” behind Cherverlet Spark. While santro was not there in top three.(Remember Spark was launched just 5 months back, and wagonR is with us for last 8 years)

I FOUND THE CAR IS COMFORTABLE, EASY TO STEER, GOOD MILEAGE. I am very happy on visiting this blog. I have few doubts, I have to drive for 60-100Kms aday, 25days a month.I live in sub urban India. Roads can be really muddy in rainy season. I donot want to resale the car as long as it is serving the purpose. If wagon R with LPG kit Provided by the company itselt is used, will car performance decreases in long run. Santro XO 2006(oct)driven for 29,000kms, is being offered for 3,20,000 by my friend. IS it a good deal.Can I fit LPG/CNG to Santro XO, will it decrease its performance.Kindly advice me as this is going to be my first car, I learnt driving in Driving school and got licence after test, without approaching the broker.

It was very difficult to choose between Santro and WagonR, but i found WagonR more value for money hatchback.
I booked the WagonR (LXi petrol) about 1 week ago of Dusshera and got the car in Dusshera.
i liked the new wagonR looks. It is like mini SUV, with roofrails it looks superub. When ever u enter into car it give u a feel of lot of space than Santro. It is having more boot space then Santro also rear seat is cmpletely foldable.
After a lot of study i saw that technology used in WagonR is more advanced than Santro e.g
(1) WagonR engine is more compact and small but produces the same power as Santro
(2) Wagon R engine is having 4 cylinder 16 valves, which is 12 in Santro. More valves are always good for engines life since exsaust is good.
(3) Wagon R have Electronic Power Steering but Santro have old hydrolic PS.
(4) Wagon R is equipped with 32 bit on board microprocessor, since 32 bit processor are having more speed than 16 bit therefore it’s MPFI section is very efficient. Also many parts of the vehicle is microprocessor controlled.
Other than that i found more boot and leg space in WagonR than Snatro.
I found it’s drive extremely smooth. Pickup is too good without A/C, and cooling is fine infact people sitting in rear seat also sometimes feel shivering.
One problem i found that, when A/C is on with blower at max position, the power of the car goes down drastically.
So better option is to run the A/C in max position for few minutes then put the blower position to 2nd or 3rd position.
I hope that i cleared the doubt of many friends who r thinking between WagonR and Santro.
Of course if u want to go for look Santro is more good looking car, but if u go technologically WagonR is far ahead of Santro.

I am planning to buy a second hand car. It could be either a Wagon R or a Santro. As I have to travel for around 80-90 Kms every day, I prefer to use a CNG fuel in my car. Let me know which of these cars (Wagon R or Santro) would be better to use along with a CNG kit fitted in terms of mailage, perfomance, Maintenance etc.

If you are ready to spend 3.4 lacs on second hand vehicle, insted you can buy a new one for some extra bucks.. A new car of your colour choice and the new vehicle feeling is always better than a second hand vehicle.. more over if you think of selling the vehicle after sometime, new vehicle would always fetch you more as it would be second hand. wehre as if you buy a second hand and sell it after sometime will make it third hand which reduce its resale value by a good amount. If you are planning to take a loan to buy that second hand vehicle, the rate of interest is also more than for a first hand vehicle..
Now its your choice to decide..
