Updated Windows Vs. Ubuntu hardware requirements

I have updated the Ubuntu vs Windows Hardware requirements to include Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 10.04, memory requirements still remains a humble 256MB which hasn’t changed in the last 10 releases 🙂

  1. Sure… 256MB for Ubuntu 10.10 is maybe good for text console installation. None of my ARM devices is usable with GNOME when just 256MB ram is available.

On 256MB ram desktop machines you always have swap enabled.

  2. I’m sorry I fail to see how you can run a fully functioning desktop enviroment in 256mb of ram. I’ve run instances of ubuntu server with nothing installed needing 256MB of ram for smooth usage.

  3. Just to be fair, the requirements MS put out for Windows 7 actually mean that having a machine with the minimum requirements will run W7 and have all its functionality without the Aero bling.

Running newer versions of Ubuntu on minimum requirements can be a pain if one wants to use Gnome. I run Maverick on my very old Centrino @ 1.6 Ghz lappy which only has 512MB of RAM and I can’t say it’s a great pleasure.

I did not install W7 cuz it did not meet the minimum reqs 🙂

  4. did you try running ubuntu on 256mb of ram?

i’d say at least 384mb is minimum nowadays, and maybe 512mb is fairly optimal.

  5. I think it’s prudent to mention that I would never recommend vanilla Ubuntu to anyone with less than 512MiB of RAM.

Not that I would ever recommend Ubunbu…

  6. The last Ubuntu for me was 9.04 which ran “ok” but was sluggish on my Dual core 1.8GHz processor with 481 MB RAM, but there was heavy swap usage and it used to crawl with multiple apps running… can’t say more about the later versions.. but they ARE becoming more resource hungry, experienced this on my friends Pentium 4 1.7GHz with 512 MB RAM proper.. it is way too slow with nautilus using 140 MB ram!! I know it’s some sort of bug..which I/he was unable to solve!..

well now I use Debian Stable+Backports from past 8 months.. which is just efficient, fast and in short.. awesome!

Ubuntu for me is bloated, for my friend its not.. but is it bloat to have all the “nice bling”?.. depends on the person’s opinion..

Anyways Windows 7 wouldn’t even run on such low ram!!
    GNU/Linux FTW!

  7. i think both are nice it only depends on a person who sees the difference bet. the 2. win 7 or unbuntu.. but for me unbuntu is great but win7 is much easier to use
